School of the Arts faculty members Phillip Lopate and Brenda Wineapple discussed Lopate’s new anthologies, The Glorious American Essay: 100 Essays from the Colonial Times to the Present — a monumental, canon-defining anthology of three centuries of American essays, from Cotton Mather and Benjamin Franklin to David Foster Wallace and Zadie Smith — and The Golden Age of the American Essay: 1945–1970, which features writings by James Baldwin, Rachel Carson, Joan Didion, Elizabeth Hardwick, Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan Sontag, Gore Vidal, and many others. 

Brenda Wineapple is the award-winning author of many books, most recently The Impeachers: The Trial of Andrew Johnson and the Dream of a Just Nation.
