Columbia University School of the Arts is proud to present She Walks The Air IX by current student Chaesong Kim.
Performing joy as resistance, can one heal through anger?
“She walks the air” is a line cut out from a Japanese Avant Garde theater artist’s minimalist depiction of war, life, death and sex: Ota Shogo’s The Water Station. Incredibly humbled by the breathtaking beauty of this non western canon, and equally dissatisfied by its hyper eroticization of the female body, and failure to acknowledge colonization, She Walks the Air has been refusing to land since 2017, incessantly morphing in its shape. With more than 40 cumulative international collaborators, She Walks the Air has been a site specific performance installation at Bearnstow in Maine, multi media performance at Green Street Studios in Boston, fabric art at SAIC in Chicago, audience interactive performance at MERDE in NYC, multidisciplinary experiment at Seoul Dance Center in South Korea, animation at EstroGenius Festival in NYC, and an ensemble ritual in Columbia University. We invite you to the ninth iteration of this soft imaginative intervention in flux, where we expand “her walk” to not only walking in the air, like walking on the road, but also walking the air, like walking a dog.

About the Artist
김채송 / Chaesong Kim (she/they) was born and raised by two social activists who were a part of the student-led democratic revolution and labor rights movement in South Korea. Often subconsciously, they were fueled by a kind rage towards hierarchy, oppressive system and colonization. Recently, they have been recontextualizing such dissatisfaction as love – taking care, taking time, noticing, and holding space. They deeply identify with the inheritance of “in-between” spaces, and celebrate transcendence through an embodied communal practice. Most recently their work has been a part of Seoul Dance Center’s CO-Choreo LAB, EstroGenius Festival, Ping Chong + Company's Nocturne in 2020, and La MaMa E.T.C. They have also performed in Okwui Okpokwasili's Sitting on a Man's Head, and Samita Sinha's Infinity Folds at Danspace, and Claire Chase’s Density 2036 with Constellation Chor at The Kitchen.
