Join us in celebrating the life and legacy of Antonio Skármeta (1940-2024), an acclaimed Chilean writer, director, scriptwriter, diplomat and Columbia University alumnus (MA in Literature, LAIC), who passed away in October.
This event will include a special screening of his film Ardiente paciencia / Burning Patience (1983) shot in Portugal and made with a cast of Chilean actors who, like him, had fled into exile after Pinochet’s 1973 military coup. The screening will be followed by a panel of scholars, practitioners, and friends who will be talking about the enduring legacy of this major Latin American intellectual and artistic figure. Guest speakers include: Verónica Cortínez (UCLA), Roberto Castillo (Haverford College), Pablo Macaya, and School of the Arts professors María José Contreras and Elizabeth Ramírez-Soto.
Co-sponsored by the School of the Arts’ Film and Media Studies MA and Undergraduate Programs and Theatre MFA Program, Columbia University’s Institute of Latin American Studies, and the Department of Latin American and Iberian Cultures.
