While studying abroad at Delhi University, two obliviously privileged, proudly queer NYC college kids discover Shaadi.com, a matchmaking app like Tinder, but run by the parents. To "help" their Indian-American bestie find true love—and pay off their loans with the dowry money—they decide to arrange a traditional marriage, taking "chosen family" one step too far. A farce with heart, sending up both Hollywood and Bollywood rom-com tropes, White Bitches in Delhi explores the savior complex, class and identity, internally and externally imposed stereotypes, and when it's time to BeReal.
About the Playwright
Ellis Abigail Stump (they/she) is an MFA Candidate and Playwriting/Screenwriting Professor at Columbia University, bringing shame to her hometown of Amish Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Currently, they’re developing their work with director Leigh Silverman and mentor Steve Martin. Ellis has been produced Off-Broadway by The Wild Project, Yonder Window Theatre, Bohemian National Hall, Chain Theatre, and numerous regional theaters; won the Vaclav Havel Playwriting Award, Yonder Window Ascending Playwright Award, and international residences at Wallace Stegner House and Prague Performing Arts Academy; and finalized in competitions by The Dramatists Guild, Emerson Stage, Fulton Theatre, American Blues Theater, Bay Street Theater, and Athena Project. Additionally, Ellis holds five honors degrees from Penn State (2019) and has worked as a stand-up comic, Berlin-based screenwriter, and certified psychotherapist.
